I am doing this right now in the family counseling niche and it was only half my idea, my idea part is the sinister monetization of the blog. I am building a blog now for a non technical professional counselor. All she wants to do is post to it and answer comments and nothing else. In fact, she wants me to post her content for her, but I taught one of her secretaries to do it.

What this lady wanted was a blog and she was willing to pay for it, She approached me to build it , making money from it never crossed her mind. I did some research in the niche and found several areas where this blog could make serious money if it ranked well. The counselor is very excited and was dreaming about becoming famous on the internet until I explained to her how getting traffic worked and all the shit that goes along with having a successful blog. I could write 4 paragraphs as to how we arrived at the our deal but here it is. She will provide all the written content and post it and I will do EVERYTHING else, including getting her ranked for a bunch of keywords(she didn’t know what that meant I told her “i get you people to your blog”). She will get what she wants, internet fame and authority in her niche and I will get want I want……wait for it……OH YEAH  I own the blog, the content, and of course the revenue it generates. At first it may seem like I am taking advantage of her but really I am not. This site is going to be nice, real nice and she is going to get what she wants; ego boosting traffic and possibly published works and maybe even invites to speak on her expertise at conferences, events,  shows etc… I am basically going to brand her in her niche on the net, her pictures will be all over the niche, her post and articles will be everywhere, as well as her logo etc., in a couple years SHE WILL BE THE AUTHORITY in this niche whether she is worthy of it or not.

There are several issue with this business plan that have came up or will come up that I will talk about later but things are fine now. I also have a few legal issues that I still need to clear up with my Atty. I will keep you posted on that.

If you havn’t gathered the jist of this post yet you are not too bright and should probably go kill yourself by shoving a Habanero laced pencil into your eye socket.

This content building approach could work for thousands of niches but you have to be careful that whoever you build out the blog for that each of you understand the goal of the blog and how each party benefits.  This really can be a win win situation and is very scalable if you want to get big, I mean 200+ employees big, that is how scalable this is.(I will be doing more of these soon)

I’m writing this post really fast so some things may not make sense. Let me give you a hypothetical. I will bet you there are at least 10 foot doctors (in my city) that meet the following criteria:

*Monster Ego

*Have no clue how to build a blog

*Real pro’s, stay updated, love their profession

*Like to help people

*Would love to feed ego, eg. “love your blog” “great post” “you saved my husbands life”

*No tech or marketing skills at all

*Wants more out of profession, recognized by peers, wants published,

*Enjoys distributing his vast knowledge to the sheeple (writing) lol

Even better, this guy wants to feed his ego so bad he is willing to write for the 9 people that stop by once a month. Ok, back to the post “deep or wide”. There have been a lot of challenges lately with Hubs, Infobarrels and such, 30 in 30 days, 100 in  30 days etc.. It makes one wonder if these 1 page wonders will work out in the long term. As I watch the internet morph before my very eyes (it is truly amazing the speed at which the internet changes) I am going to make a call and say NO. In the end it probably will have not been worth it except for the links. There are a million ways to view this but I want to make a clear point. If you are building Hubs, Info’s, Snipers etc.. for the quick rank and quick buck that is great but in order to build leverage and fold time you need to be working on an authority site. Let me tell you why, lets say Paul builds 300 Hubs, Infos, Snipers and he gets all of them ranking enough to pull 300.00 a day (+100k a year) but Bill chose another path and built a 300 page authority site, It also makes 300.00 a day. Once Paul was able to get those sites up to 300.00 a day he celebrated by spending a month at the beach drinking tatas and putting hickys on the boobs of hot natives. When Paul got back from his little beach vacation he finds his income has dropped to 75.00 a day. In a panic he finds his sites have all dropped 3 or 4 places in the serps. Paul is like WTF happened ? Well, what happened is other sites were able to pass him because his sites are so thin, thin sites tend to bounce around a lot in the serps, furthermore any authority site in one of his niches can blow him away in a second when they find the long tail you are ranking for. Now Bill took a month off also and did the same thing (Boobs,Natives). When he came back from his time off his income was actually a little higher. Bill knows exactly what happened, buy creating an authority site he created a living web site. People link to it without his knowledge and site content keeps increasing without much effort. Also, this site doesn’t move much in the serps and other snipers can’t touch it because each page juices all other pages and the pages work in harmony to satisfy the content bitch; that is Google: and she blesses the site with authority.  Yes, G loves content, but not required for ranking ((((YET))))

To get right to the point, do you want to manage and maintain 300 battle fronts or do you want to manage and maintain ONE or say TEN (for diversity sake)?  No Brainer

Don’t get me wrong, there is a place for one page wonders, I have a bunch of them and will continue to add them but I will not be looking at them as a source of income in the future. The internet is too volatile, Google is too “emo” and every day some blogger is going to incite a bunch of noobs into building a bunch of fucking pages just like yours.  You will be fighting those SOB’s (people like us) off every fucking day.

If you are serious about this business and you are in it for the long term you need to be building authority sites. Sites that you can manage and fend off approaching enemies because believe me, THE ENEMY IS COMING. Every time you look at a potential niche/subniche and think “I can rank for that and make $X a month”  there is someone (probably hundreds) thinking the same thing about YOUR niche. If you want long term success online you need to be ready to compete. Its just like in other business anywhere, someone wants a piece of your fucking pie, OR you want a piece of theirs. COMPETE = WORK

Read the above paragraph if you are ever tempted to buy an e-book or class or system that will make a ton of money. It doesn’t exist, as tempting as the ad copy may be, run the fuck away. If you are a dreamer buy the shit and do whatever it is that dreamers do.

This post is just one example why having an authority site is important, Grizz eluded to making a post about authority sites. He has several now and I’m sure he will be pointing out many of the benefits and advantages to having an authority site.

btw… In Bens post a few days ago I was glad to see he was adding authority sites to his portfolio of web properties. Ben is the hardest working man on the internet, shit the dude is fucking the Chuck Norris of the internet . He works his ass off and will be rewarded generously.

Next post will be about a new project I started, I’m gonna drop 10k on an SEO project and chronical the whole thing step by step. I am outsourcing 95% of the whole project. It will be interesting.

Two years ago I would not have known if that was a good deal or not. Today, I know that it’s  not a good deal, and in fact, can only be a scam. SEO is a very involved process and anyone that has the knowledge, ability, tools and resources to get you to the top of the SERPS is going to be damn expensive. That’s especially true if the niche has much competition. I mentioned in a previous post the project I am currently working on. On a scale of 1 to 10 for competitiveness I would rate the niche for my project a 4.0 . Now a 4 out of a 10 isn’t that competitive and you might think would be easy to rank for and you are kind of right in that assumption. The only problem is I need to top the serps for a ton of keyword phrases. One of the things that make this project even more time consuming is that I have to keep it white hat to the money site (just like you would if you were a hired SEO). That means I have to write a ton of legit content, build many supporting sites that are legit, plus the bookmarking, directories, articles, link bait etc…  A lot of this work gets outsourced to a degree but that’s not the point. The point is, what would I charge to do this for a client if asked.  First off, I would decline, Thanks but no thanks. But what would I charge for the job if I was forced to do it? Honestly, I would charge in excess of 100k and it would still probably be a loser for me in terms of time allocated.  Is my expertise worthy of that kind of price tag? It really depends on a lot of variables but the short answer is NO. Without going into details I wouldn’t be able to put together much of a SEO resume, and I don’t have any successful completed projects or SEO’d sites that I could use to support top pricing structure.  However, the project will be successful and it is worth thousands of dollars annually. SO BK, what the hell are you trying to say ? I am trying to give a little insight to what I  will call the “SEO Conundrum”. It’s not unlike the Irony of selling “MMO” “secrets” for 97.00.

You would think that any SEO that has talent and likes to make money would certainly SEO their own sites and never bother with taking on clients because it wouldn’t be worth it. Why would a badass SEO rank someone else’s assets when they could rank their own? Well, there are many talented SEO’s out there with EXACTLY that mindset. This would lead someone to believe that anyone holding themselves out as an expert SEO and selling SEO services is probably not very talented. Because if they were, they would be building their own riches. Right! Well not so fast, lets take a look at this scenerio.

Any SEO worth a shit has to allocate his resources to the channel that provides the greatest return of [capital, assets, labor, time]. In this instance lets just pick 2 channels. 1) SEO my own sites or 2) SEO for a client;  Lets say a client comes to me with a set of keywords that are worth 100k annually to me and its worth 25 million annually to them. How can keywords be worth 25 million to them and only 100k to me? I am basing the 100k annually off of my time ranking any keyword. In other words, what could myself and a staff of 3 get ranked in [insert time] and start pulling decent cash from the SERPS. To put it another way; lets say that I know that myself and a staff of three, over a 6-7 month period could SEO a site that pulls in 100k annually for me, conversely that same staff, over the same period of time could SEO this clients site and its worth 25 million to them. Now my charge to them would not be based on the 25 million (I don’t have the resources to monetize the traffic as well as the client) it would be based on how I could monetize MY TIME.

I will give one more example just to make it really clear. 10,000 page views for the term “easy credits cards” might be worth about 4000.00 to me but to Bank of America those page views are going to be worth 15000+. You see, Bank of America has the resources to make huge profits from that traffic whereas the SEO doesn’t. It would be that instance when a SEO could get paid more money working for a client than for himself. In the short run anyway. There are other scenerios where an SEO takes on outside work but I wanted to give you that example because there is a ton of opportunity for SEO/Business operators. I will be touching on this subject in future post and for you entrepreneural types this is going to get you excited.  Remember this; the real value of traffic is in the eye of the beholder, AND maybe if you change your “eyes” bam GOLDMINE!     

 One more thing, I have now been at this game long enough to have picked up a ton of information and tools. Very little of which I have shared on this blog. Anyway, I am trying to decide what I want to do with this piece of shit blog. What I think I am going to do is start a wordpress blog and use it to separate any of my readers from their money. I will for sure keep it real and honest, but I am going to monetize it. I laughed at Grizz’s latest post if you have not read it, it says ” If you don’t like the way I monetize my blog then go fuck a donkey cuz I’m raping Google search traffic whether you like it or not”   [see Griz, that took me one sentence and it took you 900+ words]   but you get the long tails.      

 Most people that have arrived on this shitty blog so far have come from the SEO side of things. More than likely you found your way via Griz at his Make Money on the Interwebs site or Lis at her Passive Income Blog or Maybe Ben at his Make Money Online with SEO blog. This blog will stay more on the SEO side of things but the new one will explore where CPC and PPC meet. Believe it or not, knowledge of one compliments the knowledge of the other. It can be a little complex because of all the variables. Wouldn’t you like to know why Google puts a certain ad on your page, and what happens when it is clicked, and how that data effects the future earnings of your site? 

Sometimes when you want to know something you have to be willing to take the other side of the trade.  More to come……

Edit: One more thing about the 299.00 SERP job. There are situations where the niche is sooooo weak that a 299.00 SERP job would do the trick, but caveat emptor -n-shit.    As I wrote that last sentence it occured to me that a 299.00 SERP job could get you to rank for your business name or a proprietary product but not much use otherwise.  My brother owns a restaurant and his Web guy got him in some directories but not much else. One night after having a few beers and burning a few leaves I thought up a traffic source that could land him 24 extra customers a month or maybe way more. The nice thing about these customers is they are unique and don’t get discounts. I ask my brother to tell me what thats worth to him and his said $200+ per month easy. You see, this would be a very basic SEO job, 2-3 keyword phrases and 100 backlinks and thats it. One hour of work at most. Would I do that for 299.00? No I wouldn’t (except he’s my brother so meals and beer will do)  and I’m sure I wouldn’t have to.

Don’t ask me the traffic source either.

There is some truth in my previous post but there is also a trap. What is the trap? Over analyzing your niche, market, product or whatever. If your learning curve is based on a “build it and see” plan then GREAT! You will eventually win at this game. There are many ways to build a IM business but the only way to have success is to DO SOMETHING. Quit stalking forums and blogs looking for “the answer” because you will not find it. You will only find success through your own actions. That is worth repeating:

My hubs are not lighting it on fire but they are doing ok. We ended up with just 25 and stopped making them on purpose. Most of my Hubs are pretty good content and 700-800 words. They were also researched pretty good. Before we continue building hubs I want to make sure G is going to be cool with it.

What I mean is there are a lot of peeps building 400 word hubs trying to snipe a long tail. I don’t know what G thinks, but I’m concerned G may construe that as MADE FOR ADSENSE SITE. Who in the fucking world writes a shitty 400 word article on a single web page about Wart Removal or Athletes Foot Remedies or Mesothemelia Cancer? Cmon GOOGLE IS NOT RETARDED and I think the shit is going to get slapped. That’s why I stopped at 25.  Also, I have seen several Hubs with Links to Affiliate Pages and its begging G for a devaluation of Authority.

So right now I am back to the grind trying to SEO my main money site and doing little projects here and there. In case I didn’t mention it earlier, my main money site at spot 1 in Google will be a 20k+ per month site and that is a low estimate. Thats assuming that I rank #1 for 35-40 keyword phrases. In order to get that #1 ranking I have calculated that I need about 6000 backlinks 1000 of them anchored to the key phrases. So that is what I have been working on and its a big project. To give you an idea how big, think 400+ websites 90% legit.  I am building this infrastructure because when I hit the number 1 spot, no one will ever get it back.  EVAR!   I think it will take me 6 months to a year to finish the job. One more thing, it is a product site and my company makes the product, that is why it is so lucrative.

I have been so busy lately its hard for me to post, especially make a well thought out post, but I have quite a few topics backed up that I want to post on so expect a few more in the next few weeks.

 In the next week or so I am going to discuss the difference between a profitable niche and profitable (converting) keywords. It will be the best and the most usefull post I have made to date. Also, later on this year I will detail how to find converting keywords.  There are only a couple ways to find keywords that convert; one way takes forever, the other takes $$$,  but you will know for sure that when your traffic shows up for your keywords the conversion rate will be as expected.  This is true for adsense or CPM or Affiliate Sales.

I ended up making 6 hubs and stopped. 3 Hubs were just quick and junkie and 3 were made for Adsense with decent content. 2 of the 3 good sites are sandboxed. I think they got sanboxed because I started linking them with 2-3 PR blog comments, about 20 links each. I think it was a mistake to not mix up the links. You should probably not start your linking with blog comments either. You should start your linking with the best quality links that are available to you. If high quality links are not available then make sure you mix them up(comments, articles, directories, replies, forum post) don’t add too fast and make sure you vary the anchor text.

Anyway, I’m still not sure I want to build a bunch of Hubpages and here is one reason why. If I am going to build 100 pages I would rather utilize that time building a site on my domain that can rank for 100’s of keywords. All 100 pages would be in the same niche and each page would gain authority from the content of the entire site. I have heard gurus say that Google ranks pages not sites, That’s not totally true! I have seen too many “pages” that were ranked top 3 that had average content and 3 backlinks, however the mothership “site” was a PR 5 with a 25K pages and 15k backlinks. It is true that G ranks pages but a page attached to, or is a subdomain of a huge authority site is going to get rank preference.  I don’t know how much authority Hubpages can give my Hubs or how long it will last.

I do think Hubpages are a great idea if you have a very unique niche and 800 pages(or less) of content are all you need. If I get the time and can find some small niches I might add some Hubs in that capacity. I will hire writers for that content because all of my time now is spent building in my big niche.

I just built my first hub today to get a feel for how it all works click here GREAT COMEDY for a laugh. My guess is that Google really trust the Hubpages community and it should be easier to rank in the Serps. I think these hubs would be a great tool if you had a niche idea that only needed one page and your content was very keyword specific, In other words if you were trying to monetize a very specific tail like “Antique Angel Figurines”.  You could also put up some hubs to help out a money site but you will have to put some real content in there or else your links will be no-follow. You need a Quality score of 70 to get do follow. Put up 3-4 hubs of decent content and that shouldn’t be a problem. As I write this I can think of quit a few ways to use these hubs so I am glad I ran across Courts post even if I don’t make 100 they will be useful.

One more thing, Court said his Hubs were making a few bucks daily overnight, however I think that Is not the norm. I read a few forum post and there are a lot of people with 100+ hubs that are making pennies. Now court knows what he is doing so that could be the difference right there. Just because its a hub doesn’t mean you can forget SEO. If you want to make $ on a hub you will have to optimize the hub/page for adsense and Google Serp.
